Comparison of the top 5 Japanese travel agents’ results in FY2017

Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) announced that the sales of the 50 major Japanese travel agents amounted to 5,708.4 billion JPY in FY2017 ended March 31 2018, 3.0% or about 168.6 billion JPY more than FY2016. The annual total consisted of 2,065.3 billion JPY for the outbound travel business (+6.7%), 224.1 billion JPY for the inbound travel business (+12.1%) and 3,419.1 billion JPY for the domestic travel business (+0.4%).

All of top five travel companies (25 JTB group companies, six H.I.S. group companies, Rakuten, 11 KNT-CT group companies, NTA) resulted in year-on-year growths of total sales. Top was JTB Group with 1,715 billion JPY. H.I.S. succeeded in increasing sales by 10% or more. For inbound travel, large growths were found in H.I.S. with 45% up and Rakuten with 28% up.  

The graphs below show the outbound travel business results of the top five travel agents (25 JTB group companies, six H.I.S. group companies, three Hankyu Travel group companies, 11 KNT-CT group companies, NTA). Among them, the top four companies marked about 10% growths, and JTB was top with sales of 56.9 billion JPY.

The graphs below show the inbound travel business results of the top five travel agents (25 JTB group companies, six H.I.S. group companies, NTA, 11 KNT-CT group companies, Rakuten) for the past year. NTA with a 30% increase in sales ranked 2nd in March 2018, and Rakuten resulted in a 50% increase in sales.

The graphs below show the domestic travel business results of the top five travel agents (25 JTB group companies, Rakuten, 11 KNT-CT group companies, NTA, ANA Sales) for the past year. Only Rakuten resulted in year-on-year growth of sales.

The sales of package tour brand products totaled 1,502 billion JPY (+0.9%) with 36,766,458 customers (-2.2%) in FY2017. The breakdown was 431.5 billion JPY  (+7.2%) with 2,172,366 customers (+4.2%) for the outbound travel business, 8.1 billion JPY (+3.8%) with 516,462 customers (+11.6%) for the inbound travel business and 1,062 billion JPY (-1.4%) with 34,077,630 customers (-2.8%) for the domestic travel business.
