Comparison of visitors to Japan from South Korea, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong in February 2020

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)’s statistics for February 2020 shows that Japan received 143,900 from South Korea (-79.9% year on year), 87,200 visitors from China (-87.9%), 220,400 from Taiwan (-44.9%) and 115,600 from Hong Kong (-35.5%). 

All of the East Asian markers shrank due to travel restrictions and a large decrease in flights since the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) spread. As visitors from the four markets reduced totally by 71.9% year on year, a share was drastically down to 52.3% from 77.5% a year ago. 

The large reductions partially resulted from shift of Chinese New Year holidays from February last year to January this year, according to JNTO.
