Domestic travel consumption in Japan reaches 21 trillion JPY in 2017

Japan Tourism Agency reported that domestic travel consumption by Japanese travelers was up 0.7% year on year to 21.1 trillion JPY in 2017 (preliminary figure), which consisted of 16 trillion JPY for overnight travel (+0.1%) and 5 trillion JPY for day travel (+2.6%).

Japanese domestic travelers totaled 647.2 million (+1.0%), comprising 323.7 million overnight travelers (-0.7%) and 323.5 million day travelers (+2.6%).

The average budget a travel was 32,606 JPY (-0.2%), 49,625 JPY an overnight travel (+0.8%) and 15,602 JPY a day travel (unchanged) as the graph below shows:

For the third quarter of FY2017 (October to December 2017), domestic travel consumption amounted to 5,022 billion JPY (-0.8%), which consisted of 3,781 billion JPY for overnight travel (-1.4%) and 1,241 billion JPY for day travel (+0.9%).

Japanese domestic travelers totaled 149.3 million (-0.6%), comprising 75.3 million overnight travelers (-2.9%) and 74 million day travelers (+1.9%). 

The average budget a travel was 33,640 JPY (-0.2%), 50,224 JPY an overnight travel (+1.6%) and 16,768 JPY a day travel (-1.0%).
