Guest nights in Japan tend to reduce, despite high occupancy rate in Tokyo and Osaka

Japan Tourism Agency announced guest night statistics in Japan in October 2016 (the secondary report) and in November 2016 (the first report). Guest nights reduced by 3.7% year on year to 43.2 million in total in October 2016 and increased by 0.5% to 41.3 million in total in November 2016.

The total in October 2016 consisted of 37.3 million guest nights by Japanese (-3.9%) and 59.4 million guest nights by international visitors (-2.4%). In November 2016, guest nights by Japanese are expected to reduce by 0.8% to 35.9 million, and international visitors to increase by 2.1% to 54.4 million.

The occupancy rates were 63.5% in October and 62.5% in November. In October, prefectures with the occupancy rate of 80% or higher were 17 for city hotels, 12 for budget hotels and five for resort hotels.

The occupancy rate in Osaka was still high with 95.7% for resort hotels, 89.7% for city hotels and 87.4% for budget hotels. Kyoto had the highest rates of 90.6% for city hotels and 87.4% for budget hotels. In Kyushu, the occupancy rate was 61.6%, as the rates in Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki and Kagoshima rose.
