International arrivals in Japan exceeded 10 million for the first three months of 2026 with 3.62 million in March

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international arrivals in Japan in March 2026 was up 3.5% year on year to 3,618,900, which were record-high for March. The market was boosted by growing demands in a cherry blossom season. The total for the first three months of 2026 already reached 10,683,500, 1.4% more arrivals than a year earlier, despite a 55.9% decrease in Chinese travelers in March.

The largest source market was South Korea with 795,600 arrivals (up 15.0%), followed by Taiwan with 653,300 (up 24.9%), U.S. with 375,900 (up 9.7%), China with 291,600 (down 55.9%) and Hong Kong with 216,300 (up 3.8%)).

JNTO explained that the large reduction in Chinese travelers resulted from the continuous travel warning to Japan by the Chinese government and a reduction in Chinese airlines’ flights to Japan

Arrivals from 7 source markets, including U.S. Vietnam (up 43.5% to 92,000) and U.K. (up 29.7% to 70,200), were record-high for a single month basis, and arrivals from 13 source markets for March..
