International arrivals in Japan exceeded 42 million in 2025, 10 million more than 2019

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international arrivals in Japan in 2025 was up 15.8% year on year to 42,683,600 in total, about 17 million more than 2023 or about 10 million more than 2019. 

Arrivals from 20 out of major 23 source markets broke the previous annual records. Top five source markets were South Korea with 9,459,600 arrivals (up 8.3% year on year), China with 9,096,300 arrivals (up 30.3%), Taiwan with 6,763,400 arrivals (up 11.9%), U.S. with 3,306,800 arrivals (up 21.4%) and Hong Kong with 2,517,300 arrivals (down 6.2%). 

in December 2025, the number of international arrivals was up 3.7% year on year to 3,617,700, which were record-high for December, but the growth rate was the smallest in 2025 because of a 45% decrease in arrivals from China, 

The largest origin market in December 2025 was South Korea with 974,200  arrivals (up 12.3% year on year), followed by Taiwan with 588,400 arrivals (up 19.8%), China with 330,400 arrivals (down 45.3%), Hong Kong with 291,100 (up 1.9%) and U.S. with 270,700  arrivals (up13.5%).

Arrivals from 14 source markets, including Taiwan, U.S. and Canada, were record-high for December.
