Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international arrivals in Japan in August 2026 decreased by 9.6% year on year to 3,098,900. The monthly reduction was seen again after year-on-year reductions for three consecutive months from April to June. 

The biggest source market was South Korea with 850,500 arrivals (up 28.7%), followed by Taiwan with 666,000 (up 7.3%), China with 418,000 (down 59.0%), Hong Kong with 247,300 (up 9.4%) and US with 197,400 (up 1.5%).

According to JNTO, higher demands were seen in East Asia, US, Europe, Australia or Middle East due to local summer holiday season, and arrivals from 14 source markets, such as South Korea, Malaysia or Mexico, reached record-high for August. Those from Italy and Spain were record-high on a single month basis, boosted by holiday season demands and increases in flights to Japan.

On the other hand,  arrivals from southeast Asia, such as Thailand or Philippines, were down mainly because of decreases in flights. The China market was still affected by the Chinese government’s travel warning against Japan. 

The total of international arrivals for the first eight months of 2026 was down 2.7% year on year to 27,626,300.
