International arrivals in Japan reached 20 million in total with 3.4 million in June 2025

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international arrivals in Japan in June 2025 was up 7.6% year on year to record-high 3,377,800 for June. The total number for the first half of 2025 was up 21% to 21,518,100, achieving the fastest 20 million ever.

June before the summer holiday season is usually a month with lower demand, but JNTO said that the growth was seen in many major markets, such as U.S. with the record-high visitors on a single month basis or 15 source markets, including South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Germany, with record-high visitors for June.

The largest origin market was China with 797,900 visitors (up 19.9% year on year), followed by South Korea with 729,800 (up 3.8%), Taiwan with 585,000 visitors (up 1.8%), U.S. with 345,100 visitors (up 16.4%) and Hong Kong with 166,800 visitors (down 33.4%).

The decrease in visitors from Hong Kong seemed to influenced from a local baseless rumor that a large-scale natural disaster may happen in Japan this summer.

The following graphs show international arrivals by month and by source market.
