International arrivals in Japan were down 5.5% to 3.7 million in April 2026

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international arrivals in Japan in April 2026 was down 5.5% year on year to 3,692,200, which showed the first year-on-year reduction in the last three months. The total for the four months of 2026 was also down 0.5% to 14,375,800.

The biggest source market was South Korea with 878,600 arrivals (up 21.7%), followed by Taiwan with 643,500 (up 19.7%), China with 330,700 (down 56.8%), U.S. with 330,000 (up 0.8%), and Hong Kong with 226,000 (down 14.3%).

Arrivals from France marked record-high on a single months basis, and arrivals from nine source markets including South Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam were record-breaking for April.

It is probable that war in Iran may affect even the inbound travel market of Japan in the future because of less traveler confidence or disruption of flight networks.

The following graphs show international arrivals by month and by source market.
