International arrivals in Japan were just 4.1 million in 2020, including 59,000 in December 2020

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international arrivals in Japan was just 4,115,900 in 2020, sharply dropping by 87.1% from record-high 31,882,049 in 2019. The annual result was one tenth of the government’s goal of 40 million for 2020.

In December 2020 only, international arrivals were down 97.7% year on year to 58,700, almost the same level as November with 56,700 arrivals.

According to OAG, an aviation date provider, international flight arrivals in six major airports (Haneda, Narita, Kansai, Nagoya, Sapporo and Fukuoka) in Japan were down 84.9% to 3,361 in December and available seats were also down 85.0% to 776,237.
