Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced that the number of international cruise travelers to Japan increased by 1.2 times year on year to 1,767,000, recovering to about 70% of the peak level in 2017.
Port calls were up 1.3 times to 3,117, 6% more than the peak level in 2018. The total was divided into 2,352 by foreign cruise ships (1.2 times more than a year ago) and 765 by Japanese cruise ships (1.4 times more than a year ago). The number of port calls by foreign cruise ships was up 17% compared to the peak level in 2017.
The top ports were Yokohama and Hakata with 209 times, followed by Naha with 205 times. As far as foreign cruise ships were concerned, the top was Nagasaki with 194 times, followed by Hakata with 191 and Naha with 187 times.
The Japanese government had goals to accomplish 2.5 million international cruise travelers, more than 2,000 port calls by foreign cruise ships and 100 ports receiving foreign cruise ships by 2025.
International fly&cruise travelers to Japan doubled to 181,000 compared to the peak level in 2019.
