International guest nights continued double-digit growth in May 2017

The latest guest night statistics in Japan in April 2017 (the secondary report), announced by Japan Tourism Agency, finds that guest nights increased by 3.5% year on year to 39.7 million in total, which consisted of 31.8 million guest nights by Japanese travelers (+0.8%) and 7.9 million guest nights by international visitors (+16.0%). Guest nights by international visitors were record-high for April.

The preliminary report for May 2017 finds that guest nights totaled 42.4 million (+5.8%), which comprised 35.9 million guest nights by Japanese travelers (+4.1%) and 6.4 million guest nights by international visitors (+16.1%). The double-digit growth of international visitor’s guest nights was found for two months in a row.

In April 2017, international visitors’ guest nights in three major urban areas (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Aichi, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo) were up 15.2%, and also the growth rate of 17.2% was found in other regions than the three major urban areas.

The occupancy rates were 59.9% nationwide. The number of prefectures with 80% or higher was 13 for city hotels, six for budget hotels and three for resort hotels. The occupancy rate in Osaka was still high with 87.2%, which was the highest nationwide, keeping 92.8% for city hotels, 91.2% for resort hotels and 89.3% for budget hotels.
