International travelers to Japan use more Japanese booking platforms than global booking platforms for local activities

Deloitte Tohmatsu Group has released the results of its ‘Survey on Inbound Consumer Attitudes and Purchasing Behavior,’ targeting 4,800 males and females from 20 years old to 79 years old living in South Korea, Taiwan, US, Thailand, Singapore and Australia who had visited Japan in the last three years. 

Local transportation is booked more on official websites

The survey results show that local transportations in Japan were booked mostly ‘before departure (65.3%),’ which was much higher than ‘in a destination (33.7%).’ 

Shopping tours to attended services were booked by 42.3%’before departure’ and 39.1% ‘in a destination,’ and activities by 44.4% ’before departure’ and 38.5% ‘in a destination.’

The survey results found that travelers select different booking channels depending on what is being booked and the timing of the booking. For local transportations in Japan, 45% of travelers used official websites prior to their trip, while 42% used them during the trip. Additionally, 30% utilized on-site counters operated by transport providers while traveling.

Activities were booked more on Japanese platforms

Regarding shopping tours to attended services, International travelers tended to use hotels they stayed or concierges of department stores (32%) in addition to global booking platforms (39%).

For local activities, they used more Japanese booking platforms than global booking platforms both ‘before departure (35% on global booking platforms and 39% on Japanese booking platforms) and ‘in a destination (39% on global booking platforms and 43% on Japanese booking platforms).
