International visitor spending in Japan amounted to record-high 9.5 trillion yen in 2025, 16% more than 2024

Japan Tourism Agency announced that spending by international visitors in 2025 increased by 16.4% year on year to record-high 9.5 trillion yen. Spending per person was up 0.9% to 229,000 yen.

By nationality and region, China topped the list with 2 trillion yen (21.2% of total), followed by Taiwan with 1.2 trillion yen (12.8%), the United States with 1.1 trillion yen (11.9%), South Korea with 986 billion yen (10.4%) and Hong Kong with 561 billion yen (5.9%).

Spending per person was estimated at 229,000 yen. By nationality, the top was Germany at 393,710 yen per person, followed by U.K. at 390,319 yen per person and Australia at 390,048 yen per person. The highest growth was found in Vietnam at 36%. China was down 11% to 246,154 yen per person. 

The most-spent category was accommodation at 3.5 trillion yen (36.6% of total), followed by shopping at 2.5 trillion yen (27.0%) and eating and drinking at 2 trillion yen (21.9%).

For the fourth quarter of 2025 (October to December), spending was up 10.3% to 2.5 trillion yen, and spending per person was down 0.5% to 234,482 yen. The top was still China at 353 billion yen, however the share reduced from 18.7% a year ago to 14.0%.
