Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international visitors to Japan in September 2021 reduced to 17,700 from 51,000 in July and 26,000 in August due to the end of Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. Compared to September 2019 (2,272,833 visitors), the result was down 99.2%.

The largest source market was China with 4,000 visitors, followed by South Korea with 2,200, U.S. with 1,700, Vietnam with 1,000 and Indonesia, India and France with 500 each.

According to OAG, international flights arriving in six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) were down 1.0% year on year to 2,800 in September 2021, and available seats were up 7.6% to 685,182 in total. Narita and Haneda increased both flights and available seats, while four other airports decreased both.

The Japanese government has eased quarantine rules for vaccinated international visitors since October 2021.
