International visitors to Japan plunged below 10,000 in June 2021 for the first time in the last four months

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international travelers to Japan was 9,300 in June 2021, plunging below 10,000 for the first time since February 2021. The monthly result was 2,565 more travelers than a year ago, but still down 99.7% compared to two years ago (2,880,041 visitors).

The biggest market was China with 9,000 visitors, followed by U.S. with 1,200, South Korea with 800 and Indonesia with 500.

International flights arriving in six major airpots in Japan were down 1.2% year on year to 2,617, and available seats totaled 636,610 (+11.4% year on year) in June 2021, according to OAG.

Travel restrictions remain effective between Japan and most of foreign countries. JNTO, however, said that it is necessary to see carefully travel restrictions in foreign countries or regions, as some of them, particularly in Europe, have eased their quarantine rules following progress of vaccination.
