Japanese expenditure to domestic travel was up 2.5% to 8.4 trillion yen in FY2025, boosted by spending in destinations

The latest survey on domestic travel by Japanese people, conducted by Jalan Research Center (JRC) targeting 15,548 travelers nationwide, founds that rise in travel spending per person underpinned the domestic travel market, while the number of travelers slightly reduced.

Japanese people traveling in Japan in FY2025 ending March 2026 accounted for 48.9% of the total, 0.4% less than the pervious fiscal year, and the total number of domestic travelers was estimated to reduce slightly to 224 million. 

The average travels a year and the average nights a travel slightly increased to 2.78 times and 1.75 nights respectively. 

Total travel expenditure was notably up 2.5% year on year to 8.4 trillion yen, particularly boosted by spending in destinations. Th survey results show that the average expenditure a domestic travel increased from 64,100 yen in FY2024 to 65,700 yen in FY2025. While the average spendings on transportation and accommodation were unchanged, spending in destinations rose from 27,100 yen to 28,800 yen. Out of the total expenditure, spending in destinations amounted to 3.7 trillion yen, accounting for 43.8%.

Tokyo was the most popular destination

Tokyo was the top destination with 11 million visitors. High growth was found in Osaka with 1,74 million more visitors to 9.4 million visitors in total and the year-on-year growth rate of 22.8% as traveler flows into Kansas area from other areas were seen because of Osaka Kansai EXPO 2025.

The most popular travel purpose was to enjoy local foods

The most popular travel purpose was to enjoy local foods with the ratio of 43.7%, followed by enjoying onsen and enjoying staying in ryokan (35.6% each). 

Trends reflecting diversifying needs were also observed; for instance, "visiting theme parks" was a more common activity for family trips with children of elementary school age or younger, and  "watching sports or live entertainment" was more popular among solo travelers compared to the overall average.
