Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) reported that the number of Japanese international travelers in August 2026 was down 3.6% year on year to 1,588,600, which showed the year-on-year reductions for two consecutive months.

Compared to May 2019 (2.1 million travelers), the number was still down 24.7%.

The total of Japanese international travelers for the first eight months of 2026 was up 2.8% year on year to 9,724,500.
