Japanese overseas travelers book hotels 2.9 months prior to departure on average - JTB survey

The latest Japanese overseas travel awareness survey, conducted by JTB World Vacations, finds that the average timings were 5.3 months prior to departure for decision, 4.5 months prior for travel planning, 2.9 months prior for hotel booking and 2.2 months prior for restaurant or tourist attraction booking.

Regarding travel planning, the largest share was 23.1% for three months prior. While more than 50% started planning within three months before traveling, the ratio of travelers starting planning half a year prior accounted for 17.9% of the total.

More less-experienced overseas travelers answered that they would have enjoyed travel if they had prepared earlier, according to the survey. For instance, the ratios of the above answer by overseas travelers with three or fewer experiences were 53.9% for hotel booking, 67.2% for restaurant booking and 72.2% for tourist attraction booking, as the table below shows:

Meanwhile, 80.7% of the total answered that they had impressions that international visitors from Asia like China, Korea or Taiwan to Japan increased. The ratio of answers that they saw travelers from China, Korea and Taiwan in overseas destinations was 74.9%. More interestingly, the ratio of answers that it is harder to book air tickets or hotels at the last minutes reached 59%.

The survey was conducted to 1,034 20 to 69 years old males and females with overseas travel experiences in the period from December 9 to 10 2015.
