The latest Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau (OCVB)’ survey finds that 62.9% of Generation Z living in Tokyo or Osaka areas answered that they do not want to drive in Okinawa even though 67.2% of all visitors currently use rent-a-car as  a means of transportation. The ratio of driver license holders among Generation Z is 44.4% only in Tokyo or Osaka areas, according to the survey.

The ratio of Generation Z who imagine rent-a-car as a means of transportation in Okinawa is 57%, however the gap is more than 30 points between ‘positive travelers in driving’  (73.2%) and ‘negative travelers in driving’ or ‘travelers without driver license’ (40.8%).

The survey also finds that ‘negative travelers in driving’ or ‘travelers without driver license’  have lower intention to travel to rent-a-car-oriented destinations, like Okinawa or Hokkaido, than ‘positive travelers in driving’ do. The gap is 10.2 points in Okinawa. 

For ‘negative travelers in driving’ or ‘travelers without driver license,’ Okinawa is ‘a dream destination.’

Meanwhile, 83.3% of all Generation Z want to use public transportation in Okinawa, and the major reason is ‘Anybody can use it without self-driving.’ 

Regarding sustainable activities in traveling, the most answers are found in ‘reducing garbages in traveling,’ and more than one out of every five said that they want to use eco-friendly transportation.
