Online spending for travel in Japan by households of two or more people was up 20% to 6,600 yen in March 2026

The Statistics Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications reported that the average spending on online shopping by households of two or more people was 28,726 yen in March 2026, and the nominal increase, excluding price fluctuations, was 9.4%.

The ratio of households using online shopping was 56.2%, 0.2 lower points than a year ago.

Spending on online shopping for travel was up 20.3% to 6,595 yen, the first 20% or more increase since December 2024. The nominal contribution to the overall change was 4.23%, a factor that boosted the overall growth.

Other items included "food" at 5,784 yen (4.9% nominal increase year-on-year, contribution 1.02%), "tickets" at 1,218 yen (8.8% nominal increase year-on-year, contribution 0.37%), and "clothing and footwear" at 2,614 yen (6.0% nominal increase year-on-year, contribution 0.56%).
