Year-on-year comparison of visitors to Japan from four Southeast Asian markets in March 2016

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)’s statistics in March 2016 finds that Japan received 99,700 visitors from Thailand (+7.9%), 33,000 from Singapore (+42.6%), 38,200 from Malaysia (+35.5%) and 26,800 from Indonesia (+37.1%). All of the monthly results were record-high for March.

The table below shows changes of visitors from the four markets in the last 12 months:

JNTO analyzed that the lower growth rate of visitors from Thailand might result from hesitation to travel before Thailand’s New Year holidays in April, however travel products for Japan in March were sold well in the local travel show.

In Singapore, sales promotions at Travel Revolution, the local travel fair, and reduction of fuel surcharges contributed to the large growth. In Malaysia, products for cherry blossom were sold well, and travel demands by families and incentives increased in March. In Indonesia, the high popularity of cherry blossom and reduction of fuel surcharges were positive factors for the monthly growth.
