Domestic travel sales of 43 travel companies in Japan in September 2022 recovered to 80% of the 2019 level

Japan Tourism Agency announced that sales of 43 major travel companies increased by 114.3% year on year to 227 billion JPY in total in September 2022. Compared to September 2019, the monthly result was down 47.4% even in the busiest month because of the 7th COVID-19 wave.

Sales in domestic travel were up 94.2% year on year to 186.5 billion JPY, which were down 21% compared to September 2019. Sales in overseas travel were up 569.1% year on year to 38.4 billion JPY due to gradual restart of overseas travel package tours, but it was still down 77.9% compared to three years ago. Sales in inbound travel were just 2.1 billion JPY.

Sales in domestic package tours tripled year on year to 43.5 billion JPY with 1,320,272 customers (up 249.1% year on year). Sales in overseas package tours largely increased from 413,000 JPY a year ago to 1 billion JPY with 2,369 customers.

Compared to September 2019, JTB Group companies decreased sales by 43% to 81.7 billion JPY in total. HIS continued reducing sales by 73.9% to 11.6 billion JPY because it largely relies on the overseas travel business. KNT-CT Holdings reduced sales by 47.5% to 22.8 billion JPY, and NTA by 48.8% to 21 billion JPY.
