Interest in overseas travel of Japanese people is much lower than the world’s average

American Express International’s survey ‘American Express Global Travel Trend Report’ which targeted Japan, Canada, U.K., India, Mexico, Australia and U.S. in early February 2024, finds that the ratio of Japanese people who answered that they want to travel overseas more than before in 2024 was just 15%, which was much lower than 32% of the seven countries’ average.

The ratio of those who answered that they want to travel in Japan more than before in 2024 was 34%, and 60% answered that they want to travel in Japan in 2024 as much as the last year. 

For this coming Golden Week period starting late April, 18% answered that they have plans to travel, and out of those, 86% answered domestic travels. 

Japanese people prefer to family travel

The most-preferred travel companion was ‘with family (67%),’ followed by ‘traveling alone (11%)’ and ‘with friends (8%).” The ratio of ‘with family’ was much higher than 53% of the world average. 

The most-selected travel days was ‘weekend (76%),’ followed by ‘one week (31%)’ and ‘one to two weeks (5%),’ compared to ‘one week (47%),’ ‘weekend (41%)’ and ‘one to two weeks (36%) on the world’s average.

Asked what kind of travel you have planned, 41% of Japanese people answered ‘road trip by a car,’ followed by ‘visiting a major city (31%)’ and ‘wellness tourism (26%),’ compared to ‘vacation in a beach (51%),’ ‘visiting a major city (42%)’ and ‘road trip by a car (40%)’ on the world’s average. 

The least compromised travel content among Japanese people was ‘foods (58%),’ compared to ‘accommodation (53%)’ on the world’s average.
