Japanese passport issues were up 2.8 times to 3.4 million in 2023, with half issued to 30 years old or younger

Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the number of general passport issues was up 2.8 times year on year to 3,401,533 in 2023, recovering from about 1.23 million in 2020, about 510,000 in 2021 and about 1.22 million in 2022.

The total was broken down into 44.8% to males and 55.2% to females, and issues to 30 years old or younger accounted for 47% of the total. 

The total of valid passports as of the end of 2023 reached 21.5 million, about 240,000 fewer passports than a year ago.
