Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of guest nights in May 2023 (provisionally) was up 36.2% year on year to 50.1 million. The reduction rate over April 2019 was 2.5%, which improved from 10.2% in April 2023.

Out of the total, Japanese guest nights were up 13.8% year on year or down 1.3% over May 2019 to 41.2 million, and international guest nights recovered to a 7.8% reduction to 9 million compared to May 2019.

The occupancy rate was 56.5% overall, 6.7 lower higher points than May 2019. By type of accommodation, the rates were 38.1% for ryokans, 49.4% for resort hotels, 68.4% for budget hotels and 67.9% for city hotel.

In April 2023 (definitely), the total number of guest nights was down 10.2% to 45.5 million over 2019, out of which international guest nights were down 15.6% to 9.5 million. By prefecture, Kochi remarkably increased international guest nights by 45.7% to  11,470 compared to April 2019. Tokyo also increased those by 20.7% to 3.6 million. 

The biggest international source market was U.S., followed by Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong and China, all of which accounted for 48.6% of the total. Guest nights of travelers from U.S., Singapore, Canada, Philippines and Malaysia and Indonesia exceeded those in April 2019.
