International conventions organized in Japan were up 1.2 times to 1,702 in 2024, ranked the 7th MICE market globally

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international conventions organized in Japan  increased by 1.2 rimes year on year to 1,702 in 2024. The number of participants was also up 1.2 times to 1.24 million, including 160,000 foreign participants, which accounted for 16.2% of the total. 

By scale, the number of middle- or large-scale conventions with more than 300 participants including more than 50 foreigners was 276, which accounted for 16.2% of the total, but 109,000 foreigners, about 70% of the total, participated in the scale conferences, 

By category, conventions for science, technology, nature and medicine reached 1,204, about 70% of the total, joined by about 1 million, more than 80% of the total. Compared to 2019, foreign participants was down 25.5%, which were better than a 37.8% reduction in total participants.

According to International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), the number of global international conventions was down 24% to 11,099 in 2024 compare to 2019, out of which 6,172 were organized in Europe. Japan was the top MICE market in Asia and 7th globally with 428 conventions, marking the highest growth rate of 17.9% among top 10 markets.
