Internet users on smart phone outnumber those on PC for the first time in Japan

Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) recently reported that Japanese internet users accounted for 80.9% of the total population. Internet users in all age segments by 59 years old exceeded 90%.

By device, internet users on smart phone accounted for 59.7% of the total, which outnumbered 52.5% on PC for the first time. Also, the ratio of families owning smart phones was 75.1%, which outnumbered 70.6% owning land-line telephones and 72.5% owning PCs.

By age segment, the highest ratio of smart phone holders was found in 20 to 29 years old (90%), followed by 30 to 39 years old (88.8%). The ratios of smart phone holders to PC rations were 39.4% to 47.4% in 60 to 69 years old and 16.1% to 27.2% in 70 to 79 years old.

The greatest concern in using internet was leak of personal information and access histories (89.5%), followed by computer virus infection (69.6%), junk mail (53.5%) and internet fraud or false invoice (51.5%).
