JAL enables boarding and transfers using only facial recognition, linked with individual information on smartphones

JAL and Tokyo International Air Terminal (TIAT) managing Haneda Airport third passenger terminal joined IATA’s Data & Technology Proof of Concepts program to demonstrate the next generation boarding experience using digital identity.

Digital identity is the totality of various attribute information that constitutes a specific user in the digital world. In this demonstration, JAL and TIAT carried out boarding and transfer procedures with facial recognition only, based on the digital certificate including boarding and passport information on a mobile wallet.

The contactless system is expected to be used not only for check-in but also for security check and immigration procedure in the future.

The first demo of transfer in the world

The demonstration of transfer procedure with digital identity was performed on the route from Haneda to London via Hong Kong, which was the world’s first transfer demonstration. They demonstrated the interoperability of identity verification using three types of mobile wallets and confirmed support for two types of biometric authentication methods: one-to-one authentication and one-to-many (N) authentication.

In addition, they confirmed that the next generation system can be compatible with the existing facial recognition systems, such as ‘Face Express’ at Haneda and ‘Flight Token’ at Hong Kong International Airport.
