Japanese guest nights in May 2022 were recovered to a 11% reduction compared to May 2019

Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of Japanese guest nights in May 2022 (provisionally) was up 81% year on year to 37 million, which were 11% fewer guests nights than the same month in 2019. International guest nights were up 193.3% over 2021 or down 92.8% over 2019 to 700,000. The total was up 82.3% over 2021 or down 26.5% over 2019 to 37.8 million.

The occupancy rate was 46.7% overall, higher than 43.2% in April 2022 or 16.5 lower points than 2019. By type of accommodation, the rates were 35.5% for ryokans, 43.5% for resort hotels, 56.4% for budget hotels and 28.5% for city hotel. The occupancy rate of ryokans recovered well to a 6 points reduction compared to May 2019, probably boosted by the domestic travel campaign by prefecture.

In April 2022 (definitely), top three prefectures were Tokyo with 4.5 million guest nights (down 36.2% over 2019), Osaka with 2.1 million guest nights (down 49.3% over 2019) and Hokkaido with 1.8 million guest nights (down 24.6% over 2019).
