Searches of summer retreat destinations sharply increase among Japanese travelers to avoid unusual heat

Agoda’s latest data found that searches of summer retreat destinations in Japan for the latter half of the summer in 2026 have been increasing among Japanese users who want to avoid unusual heat.

Compared between check-ins for April to June searched from January to March 2026 and check-ins for July to September searched from April to June 2026, cooler nature destinations were much more searched.

Top five more-searched destinations were Tateshina in Nagao Prefecture (up 277%), Furano in Hokkaido (up 229%), Yuzawa in Niigata Prefecture (up 202%), Karuizawa in Nagao Prefecture (up 161%) and Matsumoto/Kamikochi (up 133%). Agoda said that the data shows the ‘Coolcation’ to stay in summer retreats to avoid heat is more preferred.
