Travel consumption of 318.7 billion JPY may be lost due to nationwide tentative suspension of the Japan’s domestic travel recovery initiative

JTB Tourism Research & Consulting has estimated that Japanese domestic travelers during 2020-2021 New Year holiday period (December 23 2020 to January 3 2021) will reduce by 73% to 7.9 million from 29.3 million a year ago. Travel consumption is expected to reduce by 82.2% to 260.8 billion JPY from 936.5 billion JPY a year ago. Nationwide tentative suspension of the Japan’s domestic travel recovery initiative ‘Go To Travel’ until January 11 clearly hits the market.

In early December before the government announced the suspension, JTB Tourism Research & Consulting estimated 17.6 million travelers (-40% year on year) and travel consumption of 579.5 billion JPY (-29.1% year on year).

After the government’s decision and also re-spread of COVID-19 cases nationwide, many people has suspended homecoming travels and cancelled ‘Go To Travel’ bookings during the New Year holiday period.

JTB Tourism Research & Consulting has calculated losses of 9.6 million travelers and 318.7 billion JPY in travel consumption due to the tentative suspension.
