JTB Report 2025 on Japanese outbound travel finds the market is led by 20s females, and young people do not care about the exchange rate

JTB Outbound Travel Report 2025 says that slow recovery of outbound travelers from Japan is remarkable compared to other East Asia nations. While Japanese outbound travelers were down 35.2% to 13 million in 2024 compared 2019, outbound travelers from South Korea and Taiwan already recovered to the 99% of the 2019 level.

The departure rate in Japan was only 10.5% in 2024. The market was led by 20s females with the departure rate of 29.4%. On the other hand, the departure rate of 30 to 50s males, who used to drive the market before the pandemic, still stagnated

The report also includes the results of the survey on relevancy between the exchange rate and intention to travel abroad. According to that, Many 30s or older males and females said that they want to travel abroad when the yen becomes stronger.

Among 30 years old or younger males, 45% answered that they want to travel abroad regardless of the exchange rate and also that they want to travel abroad even under the exchange rate of 150 yen or higher against the dollar if they find a travel they want to experience.

Among 30 years old or younger females, 44% answered that they don’t know the appropriate exchange rate or they have not thought of the appropriate exchange rate, and 30% answered that they want to travel abroad regardless of the exchange rate. JTB Report accordingly analyzes that young people will be a key driver to recover the outbound travel demand as they do not care about the exchange rate relatively.
