Japanese airlines suffer from catastrophic reductions in passengers during this year’s Golden Week period under state of emergency declaration

All of the Japanese airlines resulted in 90% or more reductions in passengers during this year’s Golden Week holiday period (April 29 to May 6 2020), catastrophically affected by the state of emergency declaration, which asked for staying home to people to prevent spread of COVID-19. 

ANA: 96.5% down on domestic, 97.3% down on international

ANA planned to provide 1.35 million seats on its domestic flights before the Golden Week period, however the airline finally provided 232,332 seats, 84.3% fewer seats than a year ago. Passengers were down 96.5% year on year to 45,228, and the load factor was 19.5%, 55.9 lower points than a year ago.

On international flights, ANA carried only 6,591 passengers (-97.3%) on 26,992 seats (-90.8%), and the load factor was down 57.6 points to 24.4%. 

JAL: 95.1% down on domestic, 99.1% down on international 

JAL Group, including Japan Transocean Air, Japan Air Commuter and Ryukyu Air Commuter, considerably decreased domestic flight passengers by 95.1% to 47,646 on 316,929 seats (-70.9%). The domestic load factor was just 15%, 75.3 lower points than a year ago.

On international flights, JAL carried only 2,030 passengers (-99.1%) on 13,220 seats (-94.7%). The load factor was down 71.9 points to 15.4%.

Other airlines also reduced passengers by 90% ore more

Skymark reduced domestic flight passengers by 96% to 7,632 on 38,658 seats (-82%) with the load factor of 19.7%. The international service between Narita and Saipan will be suspended by May 31 2020 so far. 

AIR DO decreased domestic flight passengers by 96.9% to 2,085, providing 18,653 seats (-73.4%), and the load factor was 11.2%.

Star Flyer carried 2,387 passengers (-94.4%) on 11,600 seats (-74.8%) with the load factor of 20.6%. The international Kitakyushu-Taipei and Nagoya-Taipei will be suspended by May 31 2020 so far.

Solaseed Air reduced domestic flight passengers by 96% to 2,267 on 18,590 seats (-70.5%) with the load factor of 12.2%.

In the same manner, LCCs resulted in large decreases in passengers. Peach Aviation carried 9,312 domestic flight passengers (-89.2%) on 41,760 seats (-54.3%) with the load factor of 22.3%. All of the international services will be suspended by May 31 2020 so far.

Jetstar Japan decreased domestic flight passengers by 95.4% to 6,765 on 16,200 seats (-89.8%) with the load factor of 41.8%. All of the international  services on six routes will be suspended by May 31 2020 so far.
