Airbnb contributed to 770 billion yen to GDP in Japan, with three days stay on average by international guests

Airbnb revealed that economic contribution to GDP by stays and the related spending in Japan amounted to 770 billion yen in 2024, which was equivalent to 1.6% of the total tourism GDP. The survey was conducted by Oxford Economics.

The total amount of spending for stays and other activities was estimated at 715 billion yen, most of which came from spending of other activities than stays. International guests to Japan stayed in Airbnb listings for three days on average, and they spent 26,000 yen a day on average for other activities, such as restaurants, retail shops or transportations.

International guests accounted for 70% of the total in Japan. 30% were Japanese guests, which have been increasing since 2019. The ratio of bookings in non-urban areas was 6% of the total in 2024, which was 2 higher points than 2019.
