Online shopping spending to travel by Japanese households with two or more people was down 4.2% compared to the previous year

Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. revealed that online shopping spending by Japanese households with two or more people was 31,538 yen in December 2025, just 0.1% more than a year ago. 

The percentage of households using online shopping was 59.5%, 1.0% higher than a year ago. Online shopping spending per household using online shopping was 54,024 yen, 1.6% more than a year ago.

Online shopping spending to ‘travel’ was down 4.2% to 5,116 yen in December 2025, and the nominal contribution rate, which indicates the impact on overall changes, was -0.72%, dragging down overall growth.

Among other items, ‘food’ was  7,488 yen (up 5.4% year-on-year nominal, contribution rate of 1.22%), ‘tickets’ 1,246 yen (up 6.2% year-on-year nominal, contribution rate of 0.23%), and ‘insurance’ 1,268 yen (up 6.4% year-on-year nominal, contribution rate of 0.24%).
