Gastronomic City Award 2026 selects four cities in Japan, valuing tourism experiences based on gastronomy cultures

Gastronomic Cities Research Association of Japan announced that ‘Gastronomic City Award 2026’ selected Yoichi Town in Hokkaido, Hachinohe City in Aomori, Hida City in Gifu and Hita City in Oita as winners out of 54 candidates.

Yoichi Town was recognized for its strategic regional development centered on the wine industry and its utilization of local resources by integrating food and tourism.

Hachinohe City was recognized for its regional revitalization efforts, including the "Hachinohe Bouillabaisse Festa," which combines the fisheries and tourism industries, and food culture experience tours.

Hida City was recognized for its sustainable activities, including the quality of Hida beef and rice, as well as its use of medicinal herbs to promote citizen health and the "Hidasuke!" project to increase visitors.

Hita City was highly praised for its abundant water resources, diverse food culture, and its system for promoting gourmet experiences and gastronomy tourism through a regional DMO.

Gastronomic City Award, which was launched in 2024, has 10 criteria, not only taste but also connection with local history, culture or industry, new business creation from local resources or public-private efforts.
