Japan Times, a leading English newspaper in Japan, selected Uchiko in Ehime Prefecture in ‘The Japan Times Destination Region 2026’ project to introduce valuable regions in Japan to the world.

Uchiko is highly valued in long-time efforts to preserve the streetscapes of the merchant town that flourished from the Edo through the Meiji periods, to pass down traditional industries, such as *washi* (Japanese paper) and wood wax and to engage in resident-led landscape conservation and community development.

The project was launched in 2025 with criteria of ‘preservation of cultural and historical heritage,’ ‘pursuit of a sustainable economy and community leveraging local resources’ and ‘potential to contribute to resolving regional issues in Japan and around the world.’ Last year, Yamagata City was selected.
