Comparison of foreign visitors over the last decade [Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia]

In comparison of visitors from four Southeast Asian nations in December 2014, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) report shows that Japan welcomed 76,300 travelers from Thailand (+36.2%), 47,800 from Singapore (+25.3%), 39,300 from Malaysia (+37.8%) and 23,700 from Indonesia (+39.7%). The monthly result of Thailand was record-high for December.

In calendar 2014, all of the four markets broke the previous records. The yearly growth rates were more than 40% in Thailand and Malaysia and 20% in Singapore. Among the markets, visitors from Thailand particularly increased by almost 200,000 every year since 2012 and finally reached 657,600 in 2014, which followed the top five markets (Taiwan, Korea, China, Hong Kong and U.S.).

The remarkable growth in Thailand mainly resulted from active promotional campaign by JNTO after in response to visa waiver beginning in July 2014 and increase in LCC network between Thailand and Japan. In Singapore, weak yen and campaign for young lady FIT probably boosted the market. In Malaysia, visa waiver and a variety of joint promotions effectively worked, and in Indonesia, open of JNTO’s Jakarta office was an opportunity to enhance promotional activities.
