Comparison of the top 5 Japanese travel agents' results in September 2017

Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) announced that the sales of the 50 major Japanese travel agents amounted to 500 billion JPY in September 2017 (+1.3%), which consisted of 190 billion JPY for the outbound travel business (+4.3%), 17.4 billion JPY for the inbound travel business (+14.8%) and 292.5 billion JPY for the domestic travel business (-1.3%).

The graphs below show the outbound travel business results of the top five travel agents (25 JTB group companies, five H.I.S. group companies, three Hankyu Travel group companies, eight KNT-CT group companies, NTA). Among the top five, Hankyu and NTA each had a year-on-year growth of about 7%, and JTB remained the market leader with sales of more than 50 billion JPY.

The graphs below show the inbound travel business results of the top five travel agents (25 JTB group companies, five H.I.S. group companies, NTA, eight KNT-CT group companies, Rakuten) for the past year. The largest growth was 55.5% for H.I.S., followed by 46.2% for KNT-CT and 28.6% for Rakuten.

The graphs below show the domestic travel business results of the top five travel agents (25 JTB group companies, Rakuten, eight KNT-CT group companies, NTA, ANA Sales) for the past year. The top five agents all suffered a year-on-year reduction of their sales except Rakuten, which grew by 6.7%.

The sales of package tour brand products totaled 128.8 billion JPY (-2.0%) with 3,279,903 customers (-3.7%) in September 2017, including 41.3 billion JPY  (+4.4%) with 215,522 customers (+8.4%) for the outbound travel business, 550 million JPY (+0.4%) with 36,692 customers (+7.6%) for the inbound travel business and 86.9 billion JPY (-4.8%) with 3,027,689 customers (-4.6%) for the domestic travel business. The unit prices kept on falling for both the outbound and inbound markets.

According to the travel companies, the outbound travel market particularly benefited from high demand for Hawaii. The inbound travel market was particularly vitalized by travelers from Europe, Australia, China, and South Korea. The domestic travel market suffered from a typhoon that occurred during a 3-day holiday period in September.
