Visa Worldwide Japan has released the latest results of its "Global Travel Intentions 2026" study, which examines global international travel trends. The survey covered more than 47,000 people worldwide, including over 17,000 respondents from the Asia-Pacific region and 1,024 from Japan.

Despite ongoing rising prices and global uncertainty, the survey results show that a trend of travelers adopting a "smart" approach to travel has become evident. Travelers in the APAC region, including Japan, tend to select trusted destinations and plan flexible itineraries capable of adapting to changing circumstances.

Among Japanese outbound travelers, the most selected destination was South Korea (21%), followed by Taiwan (17%), US (12%), Australia (9%) and Hong Kong (4%).

The top next destination within next 12 months was also South Korea (26%), followed by Taiwan (18%), US (12%), Australia (11%) and Hong Kong (8%).

Among Japanese outbound travelers, the ratio of those who booked accommodations before departures was 88%, and the ratio of those who booked local activities before departures was 60%. 73% said that they chose restaurants in a destination, and 64% said they chose  transportations in a destination.

Japanese travelers are also utilizing AI for pre-trip planning, as  39% reported using AI to explore destinations and gather travel ideas, while 30% use it to search for local tours and experiences.

Meanwhile, Japan continued being the most popular destination among APAC travelers. 21% visited Japan in the last 12 months, and 28% selected Japan as the next destination within the next 12 months.
