Foreign travelers’ overnights in Japan resulted in year-on-year growths of 60% in July and August 2015

Japan Tourism Agency announced that a total of overnights in Japan in July 2015 increased by 10.9% year on year to 46.3 million guest nights (the second preliminary report), out of which foreign travelers’ overnights were remarkably up 68.4% to record-high 6.82 million guest nights. The ratio of foreign travelers’ overnights was 14.7% of the total.

The agency also announced the first preliminary report for August 2015 that a total of overnights in Japan in increased by 1.4% year on year to 55 million guest nights including 6.06 million guest nights by foreign travelers with a share of 11%.

In the inbound travel market, the largest growth of overnights was found in China (+110.6% in July, +124.2% in August). Also, remarkable growths were found in Hong Kong (+62.3% in July, +70.3% in August) and Korea (+52.5% in July, +55.6% in August).

In July, the year-on-year growth rates of overnights by foreign travelers were 55.6% in the three metropolitan areas (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Aichi, Osaka and Hyogo) and 63.3% in local regions.

The occupancy rates were 82.2% in July and 84.9% in August for city hotels, 78.1% in July and 80.1% in August for budget hotels and 61.1% in July and 74.1% in August for resort hotels.
