GREEN×EXPO 2027 overview was unveiled 6 months before opening, featuring National Days for 59 countries and organizations

The Japan Association for the International Horticultural Expo 2027 announced the event contents of ‘GREEN×EXPO 2027’ with a theme of ‘Scenery of the Future for Happiness,’ which will open on March 19 2027 in Yokohama City. The 192-days-long event until September 26 2027 expect more than 10 million visitors in total.

The big event will be joined by more than 75 countries and international organizations, all of 47 prefectures in Japan and more than 500 private companies. Yoshinobu Tsutsui, Chairperson of the Association, said, "This is not merely an exposition for enjoying flowers and greenery. It is a platform to foster new connections—between people, between people and nature, and with the Earth itself—through the power of nature, and to share a vision of a sustainable and spiritually enriching future with the world.”

“The event will be a crucial opportunity to showcase Japan’s model of a sustainable society where people and nature coexist, while also promoting decarbonization, the restoration of biodiversity, and a circular economy to both domestic and international audiences,” Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said in her video message. “"Why not make the most of opportunities like school trips and field excursions to learn while enjoying the expo?”

Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Yasushi Kaneko (then) said, “The event would not only showcase cutting-edge technologies aimed at solving global issues like decarbonization but also serve as a promising venue for business matching.” 

Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Norikazu Suzuki (then) said, “ The expo will be a showcase to share with the world the culture and technology Japan has cultivated in harmony with nature.”

National Days by 59 countries and organizations

Throughout the 192-day event, the venue will offer visitors the chance to enjoy seasonal flowers. In March, 600 cherry trees across 40 varieties, including Somei Yoshino, Edo-higan, Okame-zakura, and Yokohama-hizakura, will welcome guests. The landscape will shift throughout the event, featuring lilies and hydrangeas in early summer, a diverse array of sunflowers in summer, and bellflowers in autumn.

Schedules have already been set for the "National Days" and "Special Days" that symbolize the international exposition, involving 59 participating countries and organizations. These events aim to deepen understanding of the participants' cultures and foster international goodwill. The overall program will feature not only flowers and greenery but also food and agriculture, music, sports, tourism, and product exhibitions.

The "Omatsuri Saijiki Project" (Festival Almanac Project), designed to showcase regional Japanese culture to the world, will feature a permanent exhibition of the Aomori Nebuta festival and collaborate with local festivals and traditional performing arts groups. Planned municipal events include the Izumisano Danjiri Festival. Additionally, the event will offer sports activities utilizing the lawn plaza, as well as stage performances and workshops organized in partnership with top athletes and sports associations.

More than 70 countries and international organizations have announced their participation as exhibitors.

Tourism and transport sectors support the event

Companies in the tourism and transport sectors are also supporting efforts to attract visitors and raise awareness through corporate sponsorship.

HIS, participating as a Platinum Partner, will conduct comprehensive promotional campaigns across multiple channels, including its website and social media. JTB will carry out promotional activities—utilizing posters, brochures, and digital signage—at its 255 locations nationwide.

Keikyu will run transit advertisements centered on Haneda Airport, Yokohama, and the Miura Peninsula, while the JR East Group will deploy wrapped Shinkansen trains and install a countdown board at Tokyo Station.

Gold Partner Japan Airlines (JAL) will deliver information via specially liveried aircraft, in-flight services, and a dedicated website, while also assisting with training for event operations staff.

The Tokyu Group is promoting its appeal through special event trains, while JR Tokai is targeting the Kansai and Tokai regions through means such as platform door advertisements at stations served by the Shinkansen "Nozomi" service.
