Japanese domestic travel consumption was up 6% to 27 trillion yen in 2025 despite a reduction in Q4

Japan Tourism Agency announced that the total amount of Japanese domestic travel consumption was up 6% year on year to 26.8 trillion yen in 2025, which were divided into 21.7 trillion yen for overnight trips (up 6.8% year on year) and 5 trillion yen for day trips (up 4.9% year on year).

The number of Japanese domestic travelers in Japan was up 2.5% year on year to 554 million in total, which consisted of 300 million overnight travelers (up 2.5%) and 253 million day travelers (up 2.3%).

Travel spending a travel per traveler was up 3.8% to 48,359 yen. It was up 4.2% to 72,273 yen for overnight trip and up 2.3% to 19,982 yen for day trip.

Travel consumption reduced in Q4 of 2025

The amount of Japanese domestic travel consumption in the fourth quarter of 2025 (October to December) was down 2.6% year on year to 6.3 trillion yen, which were divided into 5.1 trillion yen for overnight trips (down 3.5% year on year) and 1.2 trillion yen for day trips (up 1.5% year on year).

The number of Japanese domestic travelers in Japan was down 0.1% year on year to 128 million, which consisted of 70.9 million overnight travelers (down 0.2%) and 56.7 million day travelers (unchanged).

Travel spending a travel per traveler was down 2.5% to 49,402 yen. It was down 3.4% to 72,385 yen for overnight trip and up 1.5% to 20,627 yen for day trip.
