Spending in Japan by international visitors amounted to 2.5 trillion yen for Q2 of 2026

Japan Tourism Agency announced that spending by international visitors for the second quarter of 2026 (April to June) increased by 0.2% year on year to 2.5 trillion yen.

By nationality and region, US topped the list with 384.8 billion yen (15.3% of total), followed by Taiwan with 363.9 billion yen (14.5%), China with 259.2 billion yen (10.3%), South Korea with 258.9 billion yen (10.3%) and Hong Kong with 145.2 billion yen (5.8%).

Spending by Chinese visitors was down 48.8% year on year, while growths were seen in Taiwan at 27.9%, South Korea at 12.2% and U.S. at 8.5%.

The most-spent category was accommodation at 927.8 billion yen (37.0% of total), followed by shopping at 673.1 billion yen (26.8%), eating and drinking at 545.4 billion yen (21.7%), transportation at 252.7 billion yen (10.1%) and entertainment at 108.8 billion yen (4.3%) .

Spending per person was estimated at 244,000 yen, 3.3% more than a year earlier. By nationality, the top was Mexico at 515,000 yen per person, followed by Middle East at 483,000yen per person, U.K. at 456,000 yen per person and Russia at 455,000 yen per person. 

The average nights were 13.6 nights by visitors from Mexico, 12.5 nights by those from Middle East, 14.1 nights by those from U.K. and 10.8 nights by those from Russia.
