The Japanese ruling party decides that unmanned vending machines can be duty-free shops in 2020

The Japanese ruling party has decided unmanned vending machines with customer identification systems can be duty-free shops in 2020, which has been approved as one of the annual tax revision plan.

The decision is a response to popularity of IoT vending machines for foreign visitors to buy souvenirs. For duty-free selling, a vending machine will be required to install a facial recognition function or a passport scanning function.
