Uber Japan signed a partnership agreement with Hinomaru Taxi for the ‘Robot Taxi (Auto-driving taxi)’demonstrations in Tokyo in late 2026. Hinomaru will be in charge of operation, operation management, robot taxi maintenance, inspection, cleaning and battery recharge.
Based on a memorandum of understanding regarding a Robot Taxi partnership in Japan between the UK-based autonomous driving AI company Wayve and Nissan Motor, Uber will provide a cutting-edge Robot Taxi service using Nissan Leaf vehicles equipped with Wayve’s AI driver.
For the complete driverless operations in the future, the initial trial phase will prioritize safety by having a driver from Hinomaru Taxi accompany the vehicle as a ‘safety driver.’
