A Japanese traveler spent 12% more money for domestic travel in Q3 of 2023 than 2019

Japan Tourism Agency announced that the total amount of Japanese travel consumption was up 15.7% year on year to 6.3 trillion JPY in the 3rd quarter of 2023 (July to September 2023), which were 6.0% less consumption than the same period of 2019. The total consisted of 5.2 trillion JPY for overnight trips (down 4.7% over 2019) and 1.1 million JPY for day trips (down 11.6% over 2019).

The total number of Japanese travelers in Japan was up 12% year on year to 142 million, which were 16.3% fewer travelers than 2019. Overnight travelers were up 14.8% to 80 million (down 15.5% over 2019), and day travelers were up 8.6% to 60.8 million (down 17.3% over 2019).

Travel spending a travel per traveler was up 3.3% year on year to 44,361 JPY, which were 12.2% more than even 2019. It was up 2.8% to 64,450 JPY for overnight trip (up 12.8% over 2019) and down 2,2% to 18,118 JPY for day trip (up 6.9% over 2019).
