Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international arrivals in Japan in September 2026 decreased by 5.0% year on year to 3,103,700. The monthly reduction rate was smaller than the previous month, but September 2026 ended in year-on-year reductions for two consecutive months.

The biggest source market was South Korea with 842,300 arrivals (up 25.6%), followed by Taiwan with 595,600 (up 13%), China with 430,800 (down 44.5%), US with 217,500 (down 3.2%) and Hong Kong with 145,000 (down 3.0%).

According to JNTO, the monthly records for September were marked in South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, India, Mexico, Russia and Middle East. The Asian Games in Aichi propped the market.

On the other hand,  arrivals from 16 source markets resulted in year-on-year reductions. JNTO explained that flight cancellations due to typhoons and higher prices of air tickets influenced the demands, and also a large reduction of flights from China had still continued.

The total of international arrivals for the first nine months of 2026 was down 2.9% year on year to 30,730,200.
