Kyoto saw the first growth of Japanese guest nights in the past 13 months in October 2020 with the occupancy rate of 40% of higher

Kyoto City Tourism Association or DMO KYOTO announced that Japanese guest nights in October 2020 were up 2.2% year on year, the first monthly growth in the past 13 months since September 2019. The recovery was boosted by Tokyo’s joining the Japanese government’s domestic travel recovery initiative ‘Go To Travel Campaign’ in October.

International guest nights were still down 99.8% to 722, as Japan practically refused entries from foreign countries and regions in September.

The average occupancy rate was 41.0%, 8.2 points higher than September (33.0%), marking the first 40% or higher since Declaration of the State of Emergency. DMO Kyoto, however, has acknowledged that they still have hard times because international guests were almost zero.

DMO Kyoto has forecasted that the domestic travel market may be cooler in November again because of an increase in COVID-19 cases nationwide.
